Characterized by Love {Day Twenty-One}

When I first became a believer at seventeen, someone suggested I read and memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

They also suggested that I replace the word “love” with my name and pray that those words would be true of me.

After my few grumpy mom days (which have been better since I shared it with you, thanks for the prayers!) I want to go back to that early lesson, encourage you to do the same, and spend today praying that I (we) would be truly characterized by love….

Love is patient and kind.

Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude.

It does not demand its own way.

It is not irritable (NIV says “not easily angered”), and it keeps no record of being wronged.

It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.

Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT

………………………….

Father,

You are love and Your spirit lives within those of us who believe.

You already know that I’ve not been so loving and kind toward my boys and others this week, I’m so sorry about that.

Thank you for having compassion on me and for not giving up!

Please work in me (and in my friends) in whatever way is needed to make us more loving and kind.

May our lives be characterized by love and may others know that we are Yours because of it.

Thank you for hearing our prayers and promising to answer them!

Amen.

What a great idea! Those verses were already some of my favorites, but that little trick gives them even more personal impact. Thank you for sharing and praying!!

Umm wow…this post just stopped me in my tracks. I’ve been having some grumpy mom days (and grumpy wife days). I don’t really know what’s wrong with me. But I just said that verse in my head and placed my name in every sentence. I see it in an entirely new way now and am completely embarrassed by my behavior. Looks like I have some apologizing to do.

Thanks for sharing even though it kinda stings.
