God at The Top of a Mountain

As you know, I’ve been reading the book Radical by David Platt. Yesterday I had a wonderful opportunity to sit at a coffee shop all by myself, enjoy a delicious Toffee Almond Crunch, and read more of this GREAT book! As I was reading, something stood out to me and I knew right away I wanted to post it for Thought Provoking Thursday! The author tells a story of being engaged in a conversation with two leaders of different religions in Indonesia… the leaders are discussing how all the religions have different views about small things, but when it comes down to the essential issues they are fundamentally the same. He listened for awhile and then they asked him what he thought. He said,

“It sounds as though you both picture God (or whatever you call god) at the top of a mountain. It seems as if you believe that we are all at the bottom of the mountain, and I may take one route up the mountain, you may take another, and in the end we will all end up in the same place.”

They smiled as [he] spoke. Happily they replied, “Exactly! You understand!”

Then [he] leaned in and said, “Now let me ask you a question. What would you think if I told you that the God at the top of the mountain actually came down to where we are? What would you think if I told you that God doesn’t wait for people to find their way to him, but instead he comes to us?”

They thought for a minute and then responded, “That would be great.”

[He] replied, “Let me introduce you to Jesus.” *

What a GREAT word picture of what God did in sending His son… Emmanuel: God with us! This is the Gospel. God came down to us. Something WONDERFUL to think about!

Btw, Chapter 2 had stuff that ROCKED my mind and shook my beliefs… it’s definitely worth reading!

I have got to get that book! Thank you for sharing that portion with us! You are right – that is something wonderful to think about!

My husband just finished reading this book and LOVED it. I have just started and can’t wait to sit down this weekend and spend some time with it.

I have seen this book around and need to add it to my list! I hope your time alone was refreshing!!!

P.S. How did you get the post it note graphic on your side bar? I love it!

I’d highly recommend it!

Here’s the link to make a post-it note: http://wigflip.com/superstickies/ (I found it at Dutch Being Me on one of her Post-it Note Tuesdays).

I can’t remember, but I think I made the background white at picnik.com and then saved it to photobucket… or something like that. :)
