Let’s Stop “Just Surviving” {Day Twenty}

by SomeGirl on October 19, 2011 · 14 comments

I happened upon three men talking about their gardens after church this past Sunday and was struck by how similar what they were saying was to our spiritual lives.

Listen in to what I heard for just a bit…

(men talking, quoted as best as I can remember)

“Yeah, it was so hot this summer my plants didn’t bear any fruit.”

“They were alive and green. They didn’t die, but they were just surviving.”

They didn’t produce anything.”

“And now that the weather is cooler my plants are blooming and flowering like you can’t believe.”

(to which one showed this picture of an amazingly HUGE flower in his garden taken just the other day)

As I listened, waiting to discuss an upcoming project, I couldn’t help but think of us and our spiritual lives(and I couldn’t help but share my thoughts with the men who thought they were just talking gardens). ;)

How many of us have beenjust surviving?

Our lives have been hard, and the heat of life’s problems have been wearing us down.

We’ve not shriveled up and died.

We’ve not wilted (too much).

We’ve stood as strong as we can.

But we’ve been “just surviving” (in our own ability)…

Now, with the cool, refreshing winds of revival blowing into our lives through the Holy Spirit, we are able to grow. to bloom. to bear fruit. to do things much larger than ourselves. Things that can only be looked at and said that God is at work in our lives!

And with those words and thoughts, I say let’s pray today for God to continue the good work He has started in our lives and make us more than just survivors!

Let’s stop “just surviving” and start living and growing in HIS power so that the world might see and marvel at HIM.

May it be so.

Something to think about.

What a great metaphor for our spiritual lives, Michelle! I’m praying for you as you continue your revival and hoping we can all thrive rather than just survive the problems and/or the busy-ness of daily life.

OH, MAY IT BE SO! ‘Just surviving.’ That’s exactly what I’ve been doing for quite awhile. I am so thankful for this revival and these prayers. I can’t even tell you, friend. Tears tonight. THANK YOU. *hugs*

May it be so, Lord. May it be so.

We had the same thing happen in our garden this summer/fall and wow – great analogy. I won’t look at those plants the same way again :)

Hi Michelle – wow, you have described my life to a tee. Just surviving. I do believe my roots are going down deeper and that a season of fruit and flowering is coming, but just surviving is no fun. This is the first time I’ve linked up with you and I’m glad I did. Next week I’ll put a link in my post.
God bless

I love this analogy Michelle. I pray we all THRIVE for the Kingdom!

Oh Amen! I don’t want to just survive any longer. I want to thrive – bloom, grow, and produce much fruit. Fall fire, fall!

“Let’s stop “just surviving” and start living and growing in HIS power so that the world might see and marvel at HIM.”

Amen and Amen!!!

I definitely feel, much of the time, like I’m “just surviving”, as opposed to really living and thriving. Thanks for this great post! Powerful words today!

Another powerful post.. I feel like I have been “just surviving” for a while know… just hanging on threads of His garment when I know He has so much more planned. So much more for all of us. There have been seeds thrown and watered. Sometimes it takes the heat to strengthen the roots and now I am waiting for bigger and beautiful blossoms in life. Blessings.. thank you for this.

I think this was God opening your ears to hear His truth. If I had been overhearing what they said, I probably wouldn’t have made that connection. But this was something God wanted “you” to remind us of! Thanks so much!

Beautiful post, Michelle! It’s so easy to get caught up in “just surviving” in the midst of the everyday. God has so much more for us than that!

Great post, Michelle. Sometimes not only do I feel like I am just surviving but I have felt like I’ve been trying to do just that. And at the worst I think of my two boys, pray and stand up.

I love this post. My mom has always said “you will know them by their fruits” and this is a wonderful metaphor to sick that saying with.

Hi there Somegirl,

(I’d like to use your name..but this will do for now.:o), I just wanted to say thanks for the great post. I can so relate to this! My friend, Debi, provided a link..and I’m so glad she was the first step towards your direction.

I’ve been blogging for three years now, but had not come across your linky party until now. I’ve been sharing ‘from the heart’ for over a year now..and am so glad to ‘stumble’ across a like-minded friend.

I hate to admit it..but it’s true.. that ‘surviving’ describes what I do at times. This should not be. And it WILL not be! Thanks for inspiring me to eliminate those ‘survival’ days. With the Lord’s grace..every day will be His.

In His love,
Donna @ Comin’ Home
