As I work on my Christmas Shopping List I keep thinking about sharing some information with you guys… A few years ago I saw a video that CHANGED my life and the way I think about Christmas and shopping in general. The next year (last year) I saw a video that confirmed and strengthened that change… I wanted to share both of them here:
In the years since viewing the first video, I’ve been working on a system to use my Christmas spending for good… since my Christmas budget is already pretty low I’ve had to modify the idea of spending less/giving more, to spending the same/giving more.
Here’s how I’ve done it…
My sister-in-love and I have agreed to give family gifts that are experiences… they still cost, but the combined cost is less than buying each person a gift and it’s a gift that provides time together and not just more stuff to store. ;)
My other sister-in-love and I have agreed to give each other baked goods and still give gifts to the little ones.
For the rest of my loved ones I try to find gifts that they would love that help others… fair trade items, or ministry/cause supporting purchases… here are some sites I use:

Here’s a place to search Fair Trade companies by location and product:

Another way to use Christmas Spending for Good is to shop at your regular sites through portals where an organization of your choice can receive a percentage of your purchase:
(here’s one that supports persecuted Christians http://www.spendandgive.com/release/)

Something else I’ve implemented is to request a gift that helps others when someone asks me what I want for Christmas… I personally ask for Living Water (http://www.water.cc/store/christmas-gift-cards)… my FAVORITE charity.
Some GREAT gifts to choose from that give to others:

I hope that helps you some as you do your Christmas Shopping! I can tell you I’ve REALLY enjoyed giving (and getting) gifts this way! And my loved ones seem to enjoy it, too.
Love,
♥ Michelle (aka SomeGirl)
P.S. If you have other sites to add to the list, please suggest them in the comment section below. :)

I love this list. Thank you so much for doing all the research for us!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for loving it! ;)
You know, we saw that first video in church yesterday, same as last year, and somehow it seems even more powerful to me this year. We did it last Christmas, and maybe it’s because it has been in the back of my mind all year, but this year it just seems like…I don’t know. I’m having trouble finding the words.
I guess I mean…
Even more compelling.
Thanks for sharing and spreading the word again.
I can totally relate! I just played them both for he boys and felt EVEN more passion and it’s my umpteenth time to watch them. ;)
(We all had tons of fun today, btw! Thanks for helping me play Santa!) :)
i love this video and the lists. i’m linking to it for sure! very helpful!
Thanks, Martha! I’m so glad to hear that!
This is great! I’d also add on http://www.warinternational.org/store/ – my favorite ministry working to give a voice to victimized and at-risk women around the world. 90% of each purchase goes directly to the safe house or individual woman who supplied the item! :)
What a GREAT cause! Thanks for adding that!
(oops, hit submit before I was done with my thoughts) lol
And that’s AWESOME that 90% goes directly to the safe house or women! I’ll have to do some shopping there! Thanks, again!
Thanks for this great list – and for mentioning so many Members of the Fair Trade Federation. If it helps, FTF has put together a New Fair Trade Holiday Gift Guide (http://bit.ly/c8NXWz) with ideas for everyone on your list! Happy Holidays!
What a GREAT holiday guide! Thanks, Carmen! Great to have you here, btw! :)
What a great and helpful list! We too are doing Christmas differently this year, giving in the names of the people to whom we would usually give gifts, but to a needy family instead. With all God has done for us, has given to us, has blessed us so abundantly, the usual Christmas can get to seem pretty selfish. We are, however, still giving the typical presents to the little ones – who might not be able to understand. Have a great Thanksgiving!! :-)
I LOVE what you guys are doing! What a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of our Savior! Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!
What a great list!! This is really close to my heart and something that I am sure makes the Lord smile. May He bless you richly, sweet girl!
What sweet words… thank you, Kristi! It’s nice to meet you! ((hugs))
Great post, Michelle. I just shared the advent conspiracy videos the other day. Thank you for sharing all of these sites here. You are always making a difference!
Thanks, J! You are always making me smile! ♥
I just learned about one today, through the One2One network: http://www.giveback.org. You start a “foundation” (your account, really), and then you can choose which charities that supports. You can add funds directly, and you can shop through the site for “cash back” that goes into your foundation.
Oh, what a great idea! I’ll go check that out soon! Thanks for sharing it, Rachel!
Don’t forget http://pungle.org !
Thank you! I hadn’t heard of that one! :)
What an awesome post, Michelle! Thanks for so many amazing links – and the videos are such great inspiration! I added a link to this post at the Raising Figure Skaters page containing my making-a-difference links: http://raisingfigureskaters.com/links/
Aren’t those videos awesome??! Thanks for adding the link! ♥ Here’s to making a difference with our Christmas Shopping (and our lives)! Love ya, Deb!
Very powerful videos and wonderful links! The wonderful feeling you get from helping others is what Christmas is all about. My son will be going with Engineers without Borders this summer to Ecuador to help divert a stream for clean water for a village. He’ll probably learn more about life and learn more Spanish than in college. I’m excited for him to have that feeling of helping others.
Oh my, Betsy! You must be very proud of your son (all of your sons) and the choices they’re making with their lives (I know I am for you)! :) What a neat adventure, wonderful experience and great mission!
Love your quote, btw… “The wonderful feeling you get from helping others is what Christmas is all about. “
Thanks for this wonderful article, Michele/Some Girl. Here in Canada we are also afflicted by wild materialism and consumerism at Christmas. Your article reminds us that our money and energies could be spent helping the world be a better place instead of fighting crowds at the mall and going broke just to buy gifts that clutter up the world more.
Thank you, Cathy! It’s sad how crazy things have gotten… it’s easy to get swept away in it all! Here’s to making a difference and helping the world be a better place! Thanks for taking the time to comment! ♥ Michelle
Thanks, Michelle for all the great links!
How great!
Hugs,
Teena
Hope they help! ♥ Hugs back!
Aiding artisans in the third world, Fair World Partners is also a great option you might look into…
